The Suturing Mission is an innovative project that began at the Humanitas University Chapter of Mission: Brain, in Milan, Italy. This initiative emerged from a collaboration between Mission: Brain and the company UpSurgeOn, which generously donated 10 surgical simulators to the chapter.
From its inception, the Suturing Mission was designed not only to provide medical students with simulation opportunities but to envision a global and sustainable model that could be replicated worldwide. The mission’s core goal is to “suture” gaps in medical education through a peer-to-peer approach, fostering skill development, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among students across the globe.
The first Suturing Symposium was held at Humanitas University, featuring seminars by world-renowned experts in neurosurgery and neuroscience, alongside hands-on surgical simulation sessions. With over 200 participants and more than $6,000 raised, the success of the project led to its replication in Spain and later in India, where it gathered an audience of 350 participants. The Suturing Mission is now set to expand to Pakistan, with plans to extend to many more countries in the near future.
The initiative not only provides a unique opportunity for medical students to practice neurosurgical skills but also introduces a model of international collaboration that can be adapted to other medical fields. By thinking globally from the very start, the project aims to ensure equal educational opportunities for all and to develop a self-sustaining, network-based approach to learning.
We believe that suturing is the perfect metaphor for healthy collaboration: bringing people together to create the conditions for growth, healing, and self-sufficiency. The Suturing Mission bridges gaps, fosters innovation, and empowers students to shape the future of medical education.
As the project grows, we invite chapters worldwide to join us in this endeavor. Chapters will have the opportunity to submit their applications to bring the Suturing Mission to their own institutions. Together, we can continue to “suture” the gaps in medical education and build a stronger, more connected future.
‍
It started as a collaboration between mission brain and company UpSurgeOn, with the donation of 10 simulators to the chapter.
The aim of this collaboration, since the very beginning was not only to provide a simulation opportunity to the medical student of the chapter but to conceive the project already in a global way, thinking of ways to make it auto-sustainable and replicable worldwide. With the goal of "Suturing" gaps in the medical education of students in a peer-to-peer effort, a first Symposium was realized at Humanitas University in Milano, with several seminars held by worldwide experts in the field of neurosurgery and neuroscience and sessions of surgical simulations.
With over 200 participants and more than 6000 dollars collected, the project was then replicated in Spain, then in India with 350 participants, and will soon take place in Pakistan and hopefully many more countries in the future.
Besides offering the occasion to practice neurosurgical skills already at the student level, this project proposes a model for international collaboration which could be applied in other fields and thinks as educational opportunities on a network scale instead of limiting them to a single country.
When willing to provide equal possibilities, it is fundamental to think and plan the project globally from its start, to be able to provide for its sustainability.
We believe that suturing is the best metaphor for a healthy collaboration: putting tissues in the best condition for them to repair and develop their own potential autonomously, not substituting to them but being a bridge to favor their development and evolution.
